Low carb diets are all the rage right now, and for good reason! Early research suggests that a high-fat, very low-carb diet can benefit several health conditions. Although some of the evidence comes from case studies and animal studies, the results from controlled human studies are also encouraging.

Medical jargon aside, a place that doesn’t serve bread, grains or tubers on pretty much every menu item is very rare.

Luckily for you guys, Despina Karp, lifestyle journalist for GCT, has swirled her way into the top 5 Sydney restaurants to cater to all of your low-carb nutritional needs.

Nieoes Grill; By far the cheapest low-carb, nutritious meal you can find in South Sydney, Nieo’s has quickly become popular with fitness junkies and low-carb foodies. The founders of Nioe are Theo Georgoulopoulos and Nick Xenofos who spent their lives in the hospitality industry by previously developing the popular Chickens Plus concept so they really understand what the customer needs and what quality really means. The takeaway menu is inspired by the classic Charcoal Chicken Shop & Milk Bar. All Nieo dishes are homemade and prepared daily. Their signature take-away dish is their famous Charcoal Chicken, which is marinated according to a family recipe and grilled over Australian hardwood charcoal made from local hardwood (100% chemical-free and from a sustainable source). They also have a wide variety of healthy dishes including steamed vegetables, an array of amazing salads, and the ability to easily transform everything on the KETO menu. Your BABY SPINACH salad (dried tomatoes, Spanish onions, peppers, crumbled parmesan & baby spinach) combined with tabbouli and half a grilled chicken (lemon & herbs) is my favorite low-carbohydrate dish. Another of my favorites is the BARRA PACK (grilled barramundi fillet, dill & sour cream with any 3 salads or vegetable side dishes). Did I forget to mention that this is only $ 19.90? Yes, you’ve read that correctly. Grab the family and go to Neio’s, the kids (and adults) won’t be disappointed! Sprout Whole Food Café: This gem of a cafe on the Lower North Shore made sure its low-carb customers didn’t go hungry with the Naked Breakfast: grilled halloumi, poached eggs, avocado, tomato salsa and mushrooms, then topped off with Sprout’s super green pesto. Increase the protein even further by adding bacon. For lunch, take the Protein Bowl – your choice of braised lamb and citrus dressing OR grilled miso chicken, served on a bed of kale and coleslaw and fermented vegetables, topped with a poached egg. Or if you’re into the current poke trend (Hawaiian salad with marinated raw fish and rice), they recently added a salmon poke bowl with cauliflower rice to their menu. Having trouble eating low carb or KETO while eating in Sydney?  Look at this 2Ruby’s Diner: Popular with the locals (and Despina’s favorite coffee) is Waverley’s Ruby’s Diner. Ruby’s is an award-winning diner / café that offers gourmet coffee and a healthy, seasonal menu. I joined that long line of Sunday brunch dinners in yoga pants for what I was told was “the best low carb brekkie in Sydney”. I ordered one of Ruby’s specialty coffees. Ruby’s loves their bulletproof coffees (their Iceproof coffee is a staple if you need fuel all day). The Iceproof comes with black filter coffee, grass butter, MCT oil and vanilla whey protein on ice, it honestly tastes like a milkshake! Aside from the AMAZING ‘milkshake coffee’, the breakfast salad is a crowd-pleaser; which is available all year round despite the constantly changing seasonal menu. It comes with kale, broccoli, avocado and almonds, and finally with poached eggs and soft fetta. One word and that is: delicious! If you have to try one dish from Ruby’s, it’s the “Paleo Burger”! This amazing primal meal comes with a thickly sliced, grass-lined organic beef patty, all Australian toppings, and a poached egg, all held together by a salad roll. It couldn’t be better! Ruby's Diner KETOVia Life Cafe and Grocer: As the name suggests, this isn’t just a diner, About Life is your ultimate low carb double whammy! With 7 different locations across Sydney, customers can relax in the casual wholefood cafe before heading to the adjoining grocery store next door for all of their low-carb needs. Talk about killing two birds with one stone! Popular items include their protein breads and a wide variety of low-carb baking mixes! My favorite dish is the 3-egg omelette, which covers an entire plate, filled with three fillings of your choice! (I added halloumi to mine just because I am Greek). When it’s noon, be sure to grab a Signature Protein with 2 low-carb vegetable sides for only $ 15.90! Proteins include everything from Miso, Ginger & Sesame Barramundi, or Dukkah Crusted Huon Tasmanian Salmon, to free-range pulled pork, cooked in bone broth or chicken breast with oregano, garlic and lemon. The Preach Cafe offers traditional Australian breakfast and lunch options and cleverly combines Middle Eastern flavors for a truly unique and enjoyable dining experience. What I like is that Preach’s is aware of the origin of its products and works with top vendors to source the best ethical ingredients for the preparation of their delicious meals.
