Scots woman’s lockdown ‘epiphany’ led to six stone weight loss

One Scottish woman shared how a lockdown “epiphany” inspired her to lose one stone out of six in a year after feeling “depressed” about her weight for most of her life.

Katie Cammock said her entire mindset changed in August 2020 when she had an “enlightenment” about her eating habits and lifestyle.

The then 22-year-old made the drastic decision to change her relationship with food and exercise and created a secret Instagram account to track her progress.

Katie from Dunfermline weighed 16.6 kg in August 2020 and has now lost 6 kg, which brought her to a lean 10.6 kg in August 2021, marking a full year of her new lifestyle.

The 23-year-old told the Daily Record that she feels like “a completely different person” and is now inspiring others with TikTok videos of her trip.

She said, “I’ve been overweight for most of my life. Last year I was in bed trying to take a picture of myself and found them all just ugly. I always thought what’s wrong with these pictures?

“Then it was almost like I had an enlightenment and just felt that I really, really need to change my life.

“When I woke up the next day, it was a complete change in mindset.”

Katie used a Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) calculator to figure out how many calories to eat each day and how many she could afford to leave out, and motivated herself to eat healthy.

Instagram accounts, including @weightloss_beth, provided inspiration for preparing healthy meals and she developed a new love for exercise.

Katie now enjoys open water swimming and climbing Munros and says her weight loss journey made her fall in love with Scotland.

She continued, “My friends are really active, but it has been a nightmare to get me out of the house in the past. Now we’re climbing Munros and I love jumping into cold water – just getting in touch with nature.

“I fell in love with Scotland because we can’t go abroad, there are so many great sights.

“I used to have no hobbies, now I’m a water fan and get cabin fever if I’m inside too long.”

For New Years 2021, Katie finally shared her weight loss journey with family and friends.

She had lost three stones and was amazed at the positive reaction from everyone around her.

She said, “Before I didn’t take care of my body, I was really depressed.

“I created a secret Instagram to track my progress and I haven’t told anyone. I was too embarrassed if I couldn’t.

“On New Year’s Eve, I told everyone what I had been doing in the past few months. At that point I had lost three stones and everyone said it was amazing. I had never been on a diet before so everything was new.

“Now I just kept going and my next goal was to get to day 365, which I just got on August 20th.”

She added, “I’m someone who likes to have a purpose and we’ve all been in that lockdown limbo. I felt like I wanted to do something instead of just gnawing myself through.

“I’ve now removed six stones and I feel like a completely different person.”

Katie said the coronavirus pandemic lockdown and working from home helped her make the decision to change.

She said, “Lockdown definitely helped. I worked from home for Lloyds Bank and ate snacks all the time, just ate and ate.

“I think I must have set a stone at the beginning of the lockdown.”

Katie has been on her weight loss program for a full year now

She says her mental and physical health changed with her weight loss.

She said, “When I look at old pictures and videos I can laugh, but it’s also sad in a way because I remember how sad I was all along.

“I think of all the things I missed because of my weight.

“My entire health was affected before, I was not functioning normally because of my weight.

“Now everything, including my mental health, is so much better. I don’t wake up in the morning and just want to laze around. “

Katie shared tips and advice with followers on TikTok and documented her journey through a series of videos and photos.

She added, “It’s still very important to make sure you don’t deprive yourself of things that make you feel good, like chocolate or a drink.

“The problem for me was that I was out of balance beforehand. I thought it would be normal to self-medicate all the time. “
