August 27, 2021 // Franchising.com // COSTA MESA, Cali. – El Pollo Loco, Inc. (“El Pollo Loco” or “Company”) (Nasdaq: LOCO) is implementing its plans to expand into parts of the western United States. The nation’s leading grilled chicken restaurant chain recently entered into a multi-unit agreement with TWS Restaurant Corporation to develop nine restaurants in Northern California.
The franchise group, which already owns and operates 27 El Pollo Loco restaurants in the region, plans to open the new locations exclusively in the Bay Area and Sacramento. Leases have been signed for two of these locations, one of which is already under construction. All nine restaurants are scheduled to open by 2031.
“The Bay Area and Sacramento are amazing communities and are an ideal fit for the El Pollo Loco brand as we continue to strengthen our roots and expand in Northern California,” said Manuel Perales, owner of TWS Restaurant Corporation. “We’re excited to open more restaurant doors in the community and pride ourselves on having the opportunity to offer a fun, family-friendly dining experience that features El Pollo Locos signature citrus marinated fire grilled chicken and fresh, authentic El Pollo Loco can enjoy menu offerings. “
Perales is hardly a newcomer to the El Pollo Loco franchise system. He worked in the company’s corporate division for more than a decade, including as deputy managing director, district manager, training manager, operations coordinator and franchise consultant. He became a franchisee of El Pollo Loco in 2000 and since then owns and operates 27 restaurants in the Bay Area, East Bay and Sacramento.
“Manuel and the team at TWS Restaurant Corporation have been a remarkable addition to our company and have played a vital role in fueling our growth,” said Brian Carmichall, chief development officer, El Pollo Loco. “This talented group is exactly the type of franchisee we prefer to align with as we continue to expand into new and existing markets.”
The new restaurants will feature the new El Pollo Loco prototypes, designed to meet the needs of the company’s off-premise business.
One version has no indoor dining room. Instead, it is primarily aimed at off-premises sales with a takeaway window, double drive-through, roadside pickup parking area, and patio seating. The second prototype will have a smaller than usual dining room that opens onto a spacious terrace. This format store will also have a double drive-thru and roadside pick-up car park.
Both prototypes share an enhanced digitized experience – including “Pollo To Go” trays for mobile to-go and delivery orders, digital menu boards and GPS-enabled roadside pick-up, all integrated into the company’s dynamic and versatile mobile app.
Even if the look may be different, the extensive and varied menu remains the same.
In El Pollo Loco’s restaurants, the chicken is always fresh, never frozen, marinated in a proprietary recipe made from citrus, garlic and spices, fire grilled over an open flame and hand cut to order. The freshly grilled chicken serves as the basis for an authentic menu selection, including family dishes with chicken, tacos, burritos, quesadillas, bowls and salads. The Pollo Fit section of the menu also offers low-calorie, vegan, and even keto-certified options for followers of the keto diet.
