Research on alkaline nutrition

Alkaline foods have the potential to change the body’s pH. After the food has been digested, certain foods can leave an acidic environment in the body. Acid-rich foods include high-protein foods such as dairy products, meat, fish, legumes, and many types of grain.

An article in PubMed states that basic food sources or supplements are cations – sodium (Na +), potassium (K +), calcium (Ca2 +), and magnesium (Mg2 +) – which reduce calciuria and have protective effects on the bones. On the other hand, acidic foods or supplemental sources are anions – phosphate (PO4–), sulfate (SO4–), chloride (Cl–), and organic acids – which cause metabolic aemia and, when consumed in excess, increase calciuria, which is detrimental to. is bone health.

A 2016 study concluded that excessive dietary protein from foods with high potential kidney acid loads adversely affects bones unless it is buffered through consumption of high-alkali foods or supplements. In vitro studies have shown that metabolic acidosis induces calcium outflow from the bone. In animal and human studies, an acidic environment has been associated with a negative calcium balance and increased bone resorption.

In addition, any extracellular acidification increases osteoclastic activity, which increases the absorption and removal of bone tissue. In vitro testing of osteoblast alkaline phosphatase activity, which peaked sharply at pH 7.4, was reduced 8-fold at pH 6.9.

A three-year study that looked at diets high in potassium, such as fruits and vegetables, and reduced acid levels, resulted in muscle mass maintenance in older men and women. Otherwise, conditions such as chronic kidney failure caused by chronic metabolic acidosis resulted in accelerated breakdown of skeletal muscles. Correcting acidosis can preserve muscle mass in conditions where muscle wasting is common, such as: B. in diabetic ketosis, trauma, sepsis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and kidney failure.

Reduction of acid and kidney protection
