If you’ve decided that a pair of adjustable dumbbells are missing from your home gym but don’t want to spend a fortune upgrading your kit, AmazonBasics’ adjustable weight set could be just what you were looking for.

Of course, not everyone has the space for a full set of standalone dumbbells (let alone a rack to hold them on), which is one reason why adjustable dumbbells have been so darn popular lately. In our AmazonBasics Adjustable Weight Set review, you’ll find that it’s not exactly cutting-edge when it comes to fitness equipment, but for less than $ 50 you can get a 38-pound dumbbell set that is simple to use and easy to use is stowed away.

AmazonBasics adjustable weight set in the test: price and availability

You can get the adjustable weight set from AmazonBasics at … on Amazon for about $ 50. (At the time of this writing, they were available through a retailer for $ 44.) They’re the cheapest adjustable dumbbells I’ve tested so far, but that doesn’t exactly mean they’re cheap; I think that explains why they are so sought after.

AmazonBasics Adjustable Weight Set Review: Design and Build

These dumbbells remind me of my childhood YMCA, and the all-metal construction feels rock solid once you’ve added the weight plates and tightened the collars. (Something like an oversized nut and bolt.)

AmazonBasics’ adjustable weight set includes two 3-pound bars, four 2.5-pound plates, four 5-pound plates, and four 0.5-pound collars – a total of 38 pounds for the pair. You can distribute this weight evenly across each dumbbell (19 pounds each) or load all of the plates onto a bar (35 pounds total), which allows for a good adaptation to any strength training routine you can imagine.

In fact, at this price point, taking two sets might not be a bad idea as this will essentially increase your total weight range up to 35 pounds per dumbbell instead of 19.

AmazonBasics adjustable weight set in the test: performance

AmazonBasics doesn’t hit these dumbbells; It’s a solid example of getting exactly what you pay for – in a good way. I’ve used AmazonBasics’ adjustable weight set for a variety of light shoulder exercises (lat lifts, triceps kickbacks, one-sided swing, etc.) It never felt like a plate accidentally fell off in the middle of a sentence. The textured knurling is top notch too, though it’s not nearly as comfortable as the contoured handle on the BowFlex SelectTech 552 adjustable dumbbells, which can each hold up to 52.5 pounds. (However, at $ 400, the price of entry for this premium option is much higher.)

AmazonBasics Adjustable Weight Set Rating: Verdict

If all you need is the basics and not too much weight, AmazonBasics’ adjustable weight set is for you. The tote bag is a nice bonus and the old school design works as advertised. Plus, you can buy two sets cheaply to double their value if you wish.

For a few dollars more, you can upgrade to the Flybird adjustable dumbbells, which come in two flavors – 25 or 55 pounds – and use a built-in mechanism to swap out the weight plates by simply twisting the handle. But if that’s a bit out of your price range, consider checking out AmazonBasics’ adjustable weight set.
